A French Cycling Holiday

Recently, four of my good friends returned from a cycling holiday around the southern French coast. They went for two weeks, camping and staying in tiny little B&Bs on consecutive nights, drinking far too much French wine and getting rather horrific saddle rash. Now, let me be quite clear here, cycling holidays are not my idea of fun. Horribly tight clothes and tiny tiny shorts, sat in an awkwardly painful saddle all day and having to spend eight or so painful hours scooting around country lanes only to pass out at the campsite, wake up and do it all again.

However, this lot seemed to have quite a good time. They went over a for a fortnight and spent the day cycling in four hour blocks; from nine in the morning to roughly one where they would stop at whatever little restaurant looked like it would actually serve a group of sweaty Englishmen, and then from whenever they got back on until about eight in the evening.

To me it just sounds like unnecessary drudgery but to them it was rather a liberating experience; travelling to their own schedule, stopping when and where they wanted, using the roads they had mapped out for themselves and just generally making a right go of it. What is more, by the end of the fortnight they were probably in the best shape they had been for their whole lives. According to their version of events after the first day you feel fine but the next day you are in so much pain that you can’t actually imagine going on.

But go on they did, covering obscene amounts of distance through pretty little French villages and the picturesque countryside. It also turned out to be a very cheap holiday. They drove, taking the channel tunnel to France, parked up in a long stay car park and then cycled a massive circuit about the countryside before returning to their vehicle.

Taking only what they needed they managed to keep their costs well down (tents are much cheaper than hotels). They actually said the best bit of money they spent was on their travel insurance after some sneaky-fingered French thief decided to make off with one of the group’s iPod and (luckily enough, defective) torch. They got their travel insurance with the AA and because they had got the right policy by the time my friend got back to the UK a nice new iPod was already waiting for him.

What is a Production Schedule? And what are Process Routings?

A production schedule tells the operators what needs to happen in their work centre in order to fulfill customer orders. 

By way of example lets say we are making chocolate covered nuts and raisins. There are four work centres to schedule: roasting the nuts, mixing the ingredients to make chocolate, coating the nuts and raisins in chocolate and packaging the choc-nuts and choc-raisins into polypropylene bags. Roasting and Mixing run at the same time rather than one after the other, then Coating and finally Packaging. Raisins dont get roasted; only nuts go through Roasting. 

So the production schedule for raisins is mixing, coating, packaging whereas the production schedule for nuts is roasting, mixing, coating, packaging – right? WRONG. Those are actually process routings. No, not rootings; routings. Its pronounced rowtings. Reowtings. Rautings. And spelt r-o-u-t-i-n-g-s. Those familiar with MS Project will be familiar with the paradigm if not the phraseology. 

However in the same way that any one project or customer order or SKU tends to run through various work centres, so too, any one work centre tends to run various projects or customer orders or SKUs. 

So the production schedule for Roasting wont have any raisins but could include peanuts, and almonds. The production schedule for Mixing may have milk chocolate, dark chocolate and premium chocolate. The production schedule for Coating might include peanuts in premium chocolate, raisins in dark chocolate and almonds in milk chocolate. The production schedule for Packaging could potentially include a vast number of items with variations in style, color and size of packaging as well as the different products that packaging contains. 

With the benefit of a production schedule you can improve resource allocation and coordinate production. However before you do that it helps if you know what a production schedule actually is. 

Huh? You dont get it? Well which part do you not get? Oh, you don’t get why you spent about a trillion dollars on what looks to me like MS Project crossed with a bowl spaghetti. Oh well, like they say in Siberia: TOUGHSHITSKI!!!!!! 

Here is a brief, instructional excerpt from Oracle’s new and improved website for the purpose of exposition:
 
 ”You can also publish a dispatch list that enables each operator or work centre to view a prioritized list of work.”
 
Of course if you had a prioritized list of work for each work centre presumably you would know how many operators you need for that work centre. I mean you don’t draw up a timetable of teachers and classrooms without knowing how many teachers you need do you? 

Once you have a prioritized list of work for each work centre you can aggregate the number of operators in each work centre to ascertain operators required in the whole factory. Then aggregate operators and work centres in various factories to ascertain operators required across the enterprise. 

The benefits of labor planning are obviously decreased production costs. However more importantly, labor planning is associated with improved resource utilization leading to reduced lead times, more consistent product quality and improved customer service and Delivery-On-Time. These are the key determinants of sales revenue.

*  Process routings tell Sales the work centres associated with their particular order (or project or SKU.)  

*  A production schedule, or in Oracle’s language, a ‘dispatch list’ (although I would have thought ‘dispatch list’ is the production schedule for Dispatch) tells the operators the orders (or projects or SKUs) associated with their particular work centre.  

*  Production schedules are underpinned by process routings and form the basis for labor planning.  

*  The master schedule brings together all these disparate views of the supply and demand data onto one screen. This is to facilitate planning and enable your people to do their work effectively.

San Gold Drills 1787 g/tonne Gold Over 2.1 Meters at New “007″ Discovery

BISSETT, MB–(Marketwire – November 23, 2009) – Dale Ginn, CEO of San Gold Corporation (TSX-V: SGR), is pleased to report that a new high grade gold occurrence christened the 007 Zone has been discovered by surface diamond drilling and is located approximately 600 meters to the southeast of the Hinge Mine. Drill hole #CD-09-007 encountered 1787.7 g/tonne (52.20 oz/ton) over 2.1 meters (6.9 ft) at 200 meters (660 feet) below surface in a continuous quartz-carbonate vein containing abundant visible gold throughout. Results from this hole are summarized below but due to the extremely high grade nature of this intersection, an accompanying table is also provided in order to present each individual assay interval within the geologically defined mineralized boundaries. The first hole drilled in this area — CD-09-001 is also reported below and is located above and to the east of hole #CD-09-007. The locations of the above intersections and of the remaining holes with pending assay data are displayed in the longitudinal section provided within the graphical version of this press release.

Dale Ginn, CEO of San Gold stated: “Our exploration team led by Bill Ferreira has made its fourth high grade discovery near surface in close proximity to our mill in the past 18 months and its third discovery this year. Hole #007 is the highest grade intersection that I can recall in the Rice Lake Belt, rivaling the best holes ever drilled in the neighboring Red Lake camp and certainly eclipses anything we have drilled to date in the Hinge zone. This discovery is again testimony to the solid and unique geological thinking that our exploration team has undertaken as well as a credit to the time tested success that drilling near past and producing mines brings.”

Assays are pending from intersections of the same zone in four holes: CD-09-002, 003, 004 and 005. Hole #006 has not yet been logged while hole #008 was shut down early due to hole deviation from the intended target. This zone remains open along strike to the north-east and to the south-west as well as at depth and to surface. The 007 zone dips steeply to the north-northwest and is made up of quartz and carbonate veins containing gold and pyrite mineralization. The dominant deposit control appears to be structural as with the previous three deposits (Hinge, Cohiba and L13); however the lithology is slightly different in that this deposit occurs at or near an intermediate-mafic contact. Strong chloritic alteration of the mafic unit is observed at the footwall contact immediately below the mineralized veining, the strike length of this contact is currently unknown. A second diamond drill has been moved from the Cohiba area in order to assist in grid drilling this zone. The 007 zone is located approximately 2 kms to the north-east of San Gold’s operating Rice Lake mine and mill, is fully accessible by road and is potentially accessible from the Hinge Mine decline.

This program was carried out under the supervision of W.S. Ferreira, P.Geo., the Qualified Person for this project under National Instrument 43-101. The drill core was split, with half sent to TSL Laboratories in Saskatoon, SK and fire assayed with an AA and gravimetric finish. Whole metallic assays were performed on samples containing visible gold. Check assays were also performed on pulps and rejects by both TSL and by Accurassay Laboratories of Thunder Bay, ON. The core lengths are actual lengths as drilled and have not been adjusted for the true width of the mineralized zones.
